The Slap Heard Around The World
Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage last night at the 2022 Oscars. Video shows what appears to be an angry Smith marching on stage and sucker punching Rock in what looked like a staged comedy scit. Chris was being his usual comedic self and roasting Oscar guests which included Jada Pinkett Smith. Chris quipped about Smith getting into character for the next G.I. Jane movie. Jada recently shaved her head after sharing she suffers with alopecia, a condition in where you suffer from hair loss. After the joke, Will can be seen laughing but quickly stopped after he saw that his wife did not take kindly to the joke. Will got up from his seat and marched on stage and slapped the comedian right across the face. Many of us thought it was a joke until Will got back to his seat and continued to shout at Chris to keep his wife’s name out his bleep bleep mouth. The room quickly got quiet and Chris Rock looked stunned until he recovered with a joke. Rock stated how it was going to be the best night in Oscar history.
Later in the evening Will went on to win an Oscar for best actor for his role in the movie “King Richard” where he plays the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. During his acceptance speech Smith apologized to Oscar officials and to fellow nominees joking that he hopes to be invited back in the future. It has been said that Chris Rock has declined to press any charges against Smith. Many feel that Smith doesn’t get any extra street cred for what he did and only did so because he knew Rock isn’t a fighter. Also if it had been another comedian particularly of a different race would he have done the same thing?
